Weeks later…

“So, what are you doing tonight?” North heard Van through her headphones.

“Fox is coming over to my place later for dinner.”

“It’s been weeks now. When do I get to meet him?”

“Soon I promise, Vannie. I just…”

“What?”

“I don’t know. I want to make sure it’s real and not me falling face-first into some more bullshit.”

“So why tell him you love him?”

“Love is hard and unclear, Vannie.”

“Mmm hmmm.”

“What you got to say, Savannah?” North questioned as she walked the last block to the new bookshop. She turned the volume on her phone up to hear Van clearly.

“Seems like you’re making it complicated.”

“Kind of like you,” North shot back, adjusting her headphones.

“Totally different, North.”

“Explain how Savannah. He loved you, wanted to love you, but you left because you feared yourself.”

“The difference is, I was protecting his heart; you’re not thinking about no one but yourself.”

“And years later, I still disagree.”

Reaching the bookshop, North walked in and found the perfect table in the back, where she made herself at home.

“Just stop fighting yourself, okay? Learn from my mistakes.”

“Van, I’m …”

“It’s okay, Sunshine. Listen, text me when you get settled in.”

“I’m sorry, Van.”

“I love you, Sunshine.”

North heard the line click through her headphones before she could respond. North shook her head, tempted to text Van that she was sorry again, but stopped. Savannah wrote her own love story and had to deal with that outcome.
